they lock it down cause some people want the phones bad enough to switch carriers which is a good thing for the provider.
if every service got the same phones there would be no incentive in the market.

Econ? Try learning Accounting. By locking yourself down with one provider your potential gross revenue is extremely limited.

The sooner the government forces these phone companies to let us buy a phone and use it on whatever network we choose the better-this business of locking phones has got to stop !

I just got an unlocked storm and am using all the features on the phone...its awesome. Instead of crying about tmobile not coming out with it, get an unlocked phone, pay ten dollars on crackberry to get the tmobile service books, and enjoy your phone.

its all a conspiracy. All 5 major cellphone companies conspire together to come out with the next best phone every few months so tech geeks, trend followers and others cancel their account (with fees, then they're cool for a few months til they go on to the next. =)

The T-mobile reps will tell you the storm will be available in a few months just to keep you waiting. No one knows if it will EVER "officially" be sold for T-mobile, however... where there's a will there's a way. I am currently using an unlocked storm with t-mobile. As long as the unit is unlocked the phone calls and sms will work with your sim card, but not internet and mms. For that, I had to go to crackberry.com where someone has altered the service books for a t-mobile 8100 pearl to work with the storm. I think he charges 10 bucks for it now, but there's a forum thread on the steps and with a little patience, you can make it work. I know because I did. The downfall- the 3g for t-mobile is a different freq than Verizon, therefor the internet on a storm adapted to work with t-mobile can only be used with "edge". It's still an awesome phone, though!
